Senator Zaffirini Visits San Patricio County

(AUSTIN) — Education, transportation, water and economic development were high on the agenda as Senator Judith Zaffirini, D-Laredo, interacted with San Patricio County residents at five events yesterday.

The senator joined members of the Sinton Rotary Club for lunch at the Back Street Café. Also in attendance were members of the Portland Rotary Club including Patti Cass-Strain, Director of the Portland Chamber of Commerce.

"Rotary's motto of 'Service above self' reflects my approach to serving in the Texas Senate," she said. "I am grateful to the Sinton Rotary Club members, including President Chip Weaver and President-Elect Patrick Flanigan, for their hospitality and for focusing on priority issues for San Patricio County and our great state."

At IBC Bank in Sinton, she discussed local and state issues with community leaders including Sinton ISD Superintendent Steve VanMatre, Ingleside City Manager Jim Gray, County Attorney David Aken, County Clerk Gracie Alaniz-Gonzalez and Bobby Nedbalek of the Texas Farm Bureau.

Senator Zaffirini also visited Gregory's Stephen F. Austin Elementary School with Gregory-Portland ISD Superintendent Dr. Paul Clore and encouraged students to sharpen their reading and writing skills, to stay in school and to pursue a college education.

A member of the Senate Economic Development Committee, Senator Zaffirini joined San Patricio Economic Development Corporation Director Josephine Miller in visiting the construction site for the TPCO pipe mill in Gregory, a $1 billion investment that could create as many as 600 new jobs.

"Thanks to its proximity to the Port of Corpus Christi and important transportation corridors, San Patricio County has the potential to attract new jobs in a variety of industries," she said. "The TPCO facility not only will create jobs, but also will help catalyze future growth."

At a town hall meeting in Mathis, she answered questions from residents and local leaders including Mayor Ciri Villarreal and members of the City Council, San Patricio County Commissioner Alma Moreno and Mathis ISD Superintendent Dr. Maria Rodriguez-Casas.

Senator Zaffirini, who has passed 725 bills and received more than 670 awards and honors for her legislative, public service and professional work, also encouraged San Patricio County residents to send her their ideas for legislation for the legislative session that convenes on Jan. 8.

"Some of my best legislation was suggested by constituents," she said. "I consider all proposals respectfully and deliberately, especially those submitted by residents of Senate District 21."

Constituents with questions or concerns regarding legislation or state agencies are encouraged to contact Senator Zaffirini's Laredo District Office at 956/722-2293 or her Capitol Office at 512/463-0121 or 1-800/851-1568. Emails may be sent to judith.zaffirini@senate.state.tx.us.
