Seliger Files Higher Education Legislation Targeting Affordability

AUSTIN, Texas — Today, State Senator Kel Seliger (R-Amarillo) filed the following bills to address the rising cost of tuition that outpaces what many Texas families can afford.

Senate Bills 18 eliminates an unnecessary statewide mandate which requires institutions of higher education to set aside a portion of one student's tuition payment to be used towards another student's tuition costs.

"The set aside discussion is just a small portion of the bigger discussion around the cost of higher education, said Seliger". "The focus should be on how to make higher education more accessible and affordable, rather than how to get the state, and students, to pay more."

Senate Bill 19 freezes tuition and fees statewide at Texas public higher education institutions for the next four years.

Senate Bill 543 implements Performance Based Tuition which requires institutions meet certain performance metrics prior to increasing tuition.

"Tuition relief and predictability is necessary for Texas students and families. SB 19 provides much needed stability for those planning to attend or attending college. Together with SB 543, we will have the opportunity to implement a long-term tuition reform solution which holds institutions accountable and ensures they remain accessible and affordable."
