Statement on Public School Finance Special Session

The call for a special session on school finance is a tremendous opportunity for legislators to ensure that all young Texans, regardless of where they live, have access to an excellent education, a goal that requires more, not fewer, resources for our school districts.

Education is my highest priority, an issue that I have always fought for as a member of the Texas Senate. I look forward to working with my colleagues to establish a permanent finance system that improves our local schools, protects economically disadvantaged districts and does not compromise high education standards.

Equally important, I will continue to interact with educators, businesspersons and other constituents to ensure that all public school finance reform proposals are evaluated from the perspective of their impact on Senate District 21 schools.

As a member of the Senate Finance Committee and of the Senate Education Committee I will be at the forefront of this issue. I am confident that Lt. Governor David Dewhurst will exert his leadership to unify the Senate about this issue.

My concern, however, is that there is no apparent consensus about a public school finance reform proposal. Whether that consensus could be developed in a 30-day special session remains to be seen.
