A small businessman, community leader and former college professor, Tom Haywood brings a background of leadership, education, and entrepreneurial spirit to the Texas Senate and the 36 counties he represents.
Haywood was born and raised in the Dallas area where he met and married his high school sweetheart, Pat. The Haywoods have been happily married for 41 years and are the proud parents of four children and grandparents of four grandchildren. Haywood and his family currently reside in Wichita Falls and the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. He recently retired from his property tax appraisal business.
Haywood is a former professor of physics at the University of North Texas and Midwestern State University. While at M.S.U. he served as the director of University Affairs while simultaneously working as an associate professor. In 1979 Haywood left the education field to become executive director of the North Texas Oil & Gas Association. Under his leadership, NTOGA became one of the most respected industry organizations in Texas.
A conservative Republican who served on the Education, Natural Resources, and Economic Development committees during his initial session in the Texas Senate, Haywood was a member of the Natural Resources and State Affairs committees, and was appointed as chairman of the Sub Committee on Agriculture during the 76th and 77th Legislative sessions. He now sits on the Senate Committees on Natural Resources, Finance and Nominations.
He has received numerous awards including the Mid-sized School Association Golden Apple Award, the Rotary Club Paul Harris Award and the Texas Young Republicans Legislator of the Year Award.
Legislative Session highlights include: juvenile justice reform, reduced regulation for the oil & gas industry, various tax credits for small businesses, the adoption of the long-disputed Red River Boundary, and many local reforms for District 30. He is an active advocate of streamlined government, individual responsibility, less regulation and an equitable tax system.
Tom and Pat Haywood are active members of First United Methodist Church in Wichita Falls.
