The Texas State Senate News

AUSTIN - A joint legislature officially accepted election returns for the Governor and Lt. Governor. This process, called canvassing, certifies that the election results are authentic.

Senators on the canvassing committee include Rodney Ellis of Houston, Mario Gallegos Jr. of Galena Park, Chris Harris of Arlington, Jane Nelson of Flower Mound, Drew Nixon of Carthage, and Eliot Shapleigh of El Paso.

Governor George W. Bush and Lt. Governor-elect Rick Perry will be sworn in tomorrow at 12 noon in a joint session of the legislature in front of the state capitol.

The capitol grounds will close at 10 p.m. tonight to prepare for tomorrow's inauguration festivities. The swearing-in ceremony will be followed by a parade and barbeque.

The Senate stands recessed until 11:00 am tomorrow in memory of Martin Luther King Jr.
