AUSTIN - The Senate Interim Finance Subcommittee on Article III Agencies continued hearing testimony on Thursday, December 4, regarding Texas' system of higher education. Representatives from the University of Houston System, the Texas State University System, the Texas Tech University System, the University of North Texas System, the Texas State Technical System, and several public community and junior colleges provided the members with insights into the present operations of the various systems around the state.

As a subcommittee of the Senate Finance Committee, the members are responsible for reviewing the present status and operations of those agencies included in Article III and to report to the 76th Legislature in 1998 any recommendations for possible improvements.

The committee is chaired by Senator Mike Moncrief of Fort Worth and includes Senators J.E. "Buster" Brown of Lake Jackson and Judith Zaffirini of Laredo.

Higher education was the main focus of discussion during a public hearing held by the Senate Interim Finance Subcommittee on Wednesday, December 3. Senators Mike Moncrief of Fort Worth (chair), J.E. "Buster" Brown of Lake Jackson, and Judith Zaffirini of Laredo are members of the subcommittee that review the present status and operations of those agencies included in Article III.

Both the Legislative Budget Board as well as the State Auditor's Office provided background information for the committee in order to bring the members up to date on current conditions as well as make recommendations for possible improvements.

Those testifying at the hearing included representatives from the Higher Education Coordinating Board. Also testifying were representatives from the University of Texas System that includes branches in Austin, Dallas, El Paso and San Antonio and the Texas A&M University System that includes branches in Galveston, Corpus Christi and Texarkana.

The meeting will continue on Thursday, December 4, with testimony from the University of Houston System, the Texas State University System, the Texas Tech University System, the University of North Texas System, the Texas State Technical System and various public community and junior colleges.
