Statement Regarding the West Orange Cove Public School Finance Court Case

While I recognize that today's hearing is just one step in a process, I don't believe anyone wins when school finance goes to the courts. Yet, major legislative changes have historically come following court challenges: Edgewood I, Edgewood II, Edgewood III, Edgewood IV, and now West Orange Cove.

It is my opinion that there is a legislative process and a judicial process and the issue of school finance reform is a legislative responsibility, and it is the mission of the Legislature to adhere to its responsibility in this regard.

Clearly the case before the court today is a significant matter. However, their responsibility is simply to look at the legality and constitutionality of the current school finance system, while the process and subsequent funding will be up to the Legislature.

We in the Legislature have been focused on public school finance for the better part of the last two years and will continue to work until our mission is accomplished. I look forward to actively addressing public school finance in the next legislative session in January. Progress must be accomplished and resolve must occur.
