Senator Patrick Calls for Capitol Security Review
Security must be improved without diminishing Second Amendment Rights
AUSTIN — Today Senator Dan Patrick announced that he will send a letter to the 181 members of the Texas Legislature and leadership calling for a review of capitol security measures in light of yesterdays incident.
"I do not want to prevent licensed gun owners from lawfully carrying guns into the capitol," stated Senator Patrick who is a concealed handgun license (CHL) holder. "I'm a strong supporter of the CHL and a strong second amendment advocate. At the same time, it is illegal to carry a gun on your person without a CHL no matter where you are. We need security measures that will prevent unlicensed firearms to be brought into our capitol."
"We have a responsibility as legislators to make the capitol a safe environment for visitors, state employees as well as legislators," said Senator Patrick. "I believe we can do this and still keep the capitol open and accessible for our citizens." I look forward to working with my fellow legislators, leadership and the Department of Public Safety to improve the security of the Texas Capitol and the safety of our dedicated staff."
"Once again, I want to commend the men and women of the Department of Public Safety for the fine job that they did yesterday in quickly apprehending the suspect," said Patrick. "I also want to commend my staff for the actions they took in diffusing the situation when the alleged gunman entered my office. I thank God that no one was seriously hurt."
