Senator Estes disappointed by FEMA denial, supports appeal
Austin - State Senator Craig Estes (R-Wichita Falls) expressed disappointment today in FEMA's decision to deny the request by Wichita County for federal disaster aid for victims of the August 18 flood. Estes is further dismayed by FEMA's assertion that state and local resources are adequate, and is working with Governor Perry's office on an immediate appeal.
"I am completely disappointed with the decision by FEMA to deny federal government disaster aid, and I strongly reject the reason for the denial," said Estes. "The federal government believes the state and local government has the resources to provide the assistance needed, but that is certainly not the case after Hurricane Ike hitting our Texas coast."
Estes' office has been working closely with Governor Perry's office to file an appeal to FEMA's decision, and has been informed by the Governor's staff that an appeal will be submitted. Estes plans to file a letter of support for the Governor's appeal and will offer any other support deemed necessary and appropriate by the Governor in this process.
"I am very grateful for the hard work and attention the Governor has given our situation in Wichita Falls, when most eyes of Texas look toward the devastation in Galveston. Our hearts and prayers are with those whose lives and property have been devastated by Hurricane Ike, but we still have vital needs for assistance from natural disasters here in North Texas," added Estes.
