State Senator Craig Estes reminds taxpayers of Sales Tax Holiday
AUSTIN - State Senator Craig Estes (R-Wichita Falls) reminds taxpayers to take advantage of the annual Sales Tax Holiday set for August 17 - 19, when state and local sales taxes will be suspended on most items of clothing.
"The tax free weekend provides an opportunity for families to save money when purchasing back-to-school clothing or for any other purpose such as work clothes," said Estes.
The Texas Legislature moved the annual Sales Tax Holiday to the third weekend in August to coincide with the later start date for most schools across the state.
Items of clothing intended for everyday wear priced under $100 will be exempt from the sales tax including baby clothing, shoes, coats and accessories like belts with attached buckles and neckwear. Items not exempt include most accessories like jewelry, or clothing intended for sporting use such as helmets or climbing boots.
Added to this year's list of tax-free items are backpacks intended for elementary and secondary school students that are priced for less than a $100.
"In addition to the millions of dollars in tax savings across the state, many businesses report an increase in business as these savings are used for additional purchases and keeping more money in our local economies rather than sending it to Austin," added Estes.
