Senator Craig Estes urges voters to cast ballot in May 12 election

AUSTIN -- State Senator Craig Estes (R-Wichita Falls) urges voters to participate in the May 12 Constitutional Amendment Election on Proposition 1, providing property tax relief to seniors and the disabled.

"I want to encourage all voters to go to the polls and vote in the May 12 Constitutional Amendment Election to provide a reduction in the property taxes paid by seniors and the disabled," said Estes.

In the Third Called Special Session on School Finance held last year, the Legislature passed a school finance reform package that provided for a one-third reduction in the school property tax rate levied by local school districts. To make sure all property taxpayers benefit from the property tax rate reduction, the Constitution needs to be amended to authorize the Legislature to reduce these property tax rates for seniors and disabled which are otherwise frozen.

"It was the intention of the legislature to pass an across-the-board reduction in the school property tax rates levied on personal and commercial property and to reduce our reliance on property taxes in funding public education," added Estes. "This Constitutional Amendment will allow the legislature to fully implement the property tax rate reductions for all property taxpayers."

Wording of Proposition 1, May 12 Constitutional Election:

The constitutional amendment authorizing the legislature to provide for a reduction of the limitation on the total amount of ad valorem taxes that may be imposed for public school purposes on the residence homesteads of the elderly or disabled to reflect any reduction in the rate of those taxes for the 2006 and 2007 tax years.
