Senator Craig Estes Expresses Disappointment at Absent Representatives

AUSTIN -- State Senator Craig Estes (R-Wichita Falls) expressed disappointment in the members of the Texas House of Representatives, who staged a protest against the Legislature's leadership by leaving the state and refusing to report for work Monday.

"My father always taught me that if you believe in something, the honorable thing to do is to stand and fight, not run and hide," Estes said after the group of House members brought state government to a grinding halt Monday. The absent members blocked the House from meeting for lack of a quorum.

"I am shocked that they would do something like this at this stage in the legislative session," Estes said.

Funding for education, children's health insurance, homeowner's insurance reform and the state budget all are endangered by these this action. Bills are dying on the legislative calendar as the clock ticks toward the June 2 end of the regular session, Estes said.
