Senator Lucio invited panelist at Southern Obesity Summit
AUSTIN — Today (Monday), Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. (D-Brownsville) addressed a group of leading experts on obesity at the 7th Annual Southern Obesity Summit, hosted this year in Nashville, Tennessee. Senator Lucio was one of four invited speakers on a panel titled "How to Implement Effective State-Level Policy," moderated by former Nashville Mayor Bill Purcell.
According to its Web site, the Summit is the largest regional obesity prevention event in the United States and includes participants from 16 southern states, including Texas. Together, these states are joining forces to fight obesity. More information about the Summit may be found at http://bit.ly/1gYnW0O.
Senator Lucio's opening remarks on the panel included a discussion of legislation he has passed to combat obesity and increase low-income citizens' access to healthy food sources. These bills include the creation of the Interagency Obesity Council and the creation of an Obesity Prevention Pilot Program, as well as bills to increase participation in Texas public schools' summer meals and school breakfast programs.
