New Interstate 69 Signs to be Unveiled

On Monday, December 5th, at 2:00 p.m., TXDOT will unveil signage for the first segment of Interstate Highway 69 in Texas. The unveiling will take place in Robstown, Texas at the Intersection of Interstate 69/US Highway 77 and State Highway 44.

Senator Lucio will participate in the unveiling along with Texas Transportation Commission members, Federal officials, I-69 Advisory and Segment Committee members and Alliance for I-69 for Texas members.

"I'm pleased to see progress," Lucio says. " I-69 now has an official footprint in South Texas and our dream of an interstate highway is within reach."

The Texas Transportation Commission gave final approval to designate the first segment of I-69 in Texas on October 27, 2011. The first segment is concurrently designated with US Highway 77 for 6.2 miles from State Highway 44 in Robstown to Interstate 37 in Corpus Christi. Federal, state and local officials partnered with interested citizen groups on the effort to bring I-69 to Texas, which is expected to increase economic development opportunities in the region.

In August, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) granted TxDOT's request to add the 6.2-mile stretch of US 77 to the interstate system, and in October, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Official's (AASHTO) Special Committee on US Route Numbering approved a TxDOT application requesting authorization to use the I-69 route number. The TxDOT Corpus Christi District is installing 10 overhead freeway guide signs and numerous route markers at intersections leading to the newly- designated segment of I-69.

"A decade into the 21st century, the Rio Grande Valley remains cut off from the nation's highway system, making the project vital for our region's economic future," Lucio says. "I look forward to the timely completion of this project."
