Commending South Texas Volunteerism this Holiday Season
Letter to the Editor
The mark of a happy holiday season should not be measured by the number or cost of presents we receive, but rather those we give, both tangible and intangible.
It is hard to put a price tag on a gift of love. Volunteering is one of the greatest forms of such love. The Corporation for National and Community Service recently reported that in 2006, more than 4.58 million Texas residents volunteered a total of 609.4 million hours of service valued at $11.4 billion. Texas is ranked 34th in the nation when measured on volunteers per capita.
Many of these unsung heroes are South Texans, giving countless hours and unmeasured talent to brighten the lives of friends and strangers.
This holiday season, I congratulate and thank all those who selflessly volunteer to help their fellow man. I encourage others to follow their lead.
My family and I wish these angels of mercy, and everyone in South Texas, a blessed and safe holiday season and a prosperous New Year!
Senator Eddie Lucio Jr.
