Sen. Lucio files companion bill transferring Irma Rangel School of Pharmacy to Texas A&M University System Health Science Center
AUSTIN, TX -- Today Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr. (D-Brownsville), joined Rep. Vilma Luna (D-Corpus Christi) in filing legislation that will transfer the administration of the Irma Rangel School of Pharmacy from Texas A&M University-Kingsville to the Texas A&M University System Health Science Center.
"I filed Senate Bill 42, the companion bill to House Bill 154, to help ensure that we work more successfully toward securing future funding for the school's operation," said Sen. Lucio. "It is my sincere hope that this pressing issue be added to the call of the Special Session. Critical hurdles have already been cleared; both the Texas A&M Board of Regents and the Higher Education Coordinating Board have given this initiative the green light. I anxiously await for the Governor to add this important South Texas issue to the call to make this transfer a reality."
HB 154 has passed the House committee process and is on the Major State Calendar awaiting debate in the full House Chamber.
"Time is of the essence and since this legislative measure has moved rather expeditiously in the House, I will request a Senate committee hearing as soon as possible and take up the House version of the bill so that it has a greater possibility of passing within the critical deadline we face," added Sen. Lucio. The current Special Legislative Session ends May 16.
"I commend Rep. Luna's efforts and diligence on this matter. The School of Pharmacy in Kingsville is greatly needed in South Texas and the rest of the state," said Sen. Lucio.
"The dream of a Pharmacy School in South Texas should not be clouded by fears that funding will not be available," added Sen. Lucio. "Under our bill, we can continue looking forward to pharmacy students completing their education in South Texas and perhaps staying to practice here upon graduation."
