Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr. appointed to Study Commission on Transportation Financing
AUSTIN, TX - Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr. expressed his appreciation today to Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst for appointing him to the Study Commission on Transportation Financing. Also appointed were Sen. John Carona of Dallas as Joint Chairman and Michael Stevens of Houston.
"Our transportation infrastructure can be the highway of vitality for our economy, or it can be the choke point for Texas' trade," said Sen. Lucio. "As our population increases and the demand on our highways intensifies, it is prudent for the state to take pro-active strides to evaluate all financing options for our current and future transportation needs."
The Texas Legislature created the study commission during the 79th regular session to focus on financing options for all modes of transportation, including use of the state's motor fuels tax and all other possible funding sources.
Sen. Lucio explained that "this Commission is timely for many parts of our state. Anyone who has traveled to the Lower Rio Grande Valley knows that our infrastructure has always been a matter of available resources.
"I am personally thankful to Lt. Gov. Dewhurst for this critical appointment," added Sen. Lucio. "I look forward to working with my good friend, Sen. John Carona to maximize every available financing tool. We will be undertaking this critical study to develop recommendations and legislation that will strengthen our statewide transportation infrastructure."
Three public members will be appointed by the Governor and one by the Speaker, who will also appoint two House members. A total of nine members will comprise the study commission.
As always, if you have any input or questions regarding these or other matters, please do not hesitate to contact Doris Sanchez, my press secretary, 512-463-0385.
