NATIONAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor:

Despite advances in protecting many human rights, we still find ourselves battling a disturbing crime, domestic violence. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Over 140 women were killed in Texas by their intimate partners this year. In 2004, 182,087 family violence incidents were reported and 11,983 adults received shelter from abusive relationships. The numbers are staggering and funds are limited. Our Attorney General has tools to curb these senseless tragedies, but needs the money to utilize them.

Last legislative session I introduced a bill, Senate Bill 309, that would allow the Attorney General's Office to establish a confidential post office box address for victims of family violence, sexual assault or stalking, once they meet the program's eligibility requirements. This safeguard would help conceal the addresses of these individuals, giving them the incentive to move to new locations. Unfortunately, the bill did not receive sufficient funding to become law. However, I intend to re-file this legislation in 2007 to protect innocent victims of abuse, and I count on the support of all Texans.

Eddie Lucio, Jr.
State Senator (District 27)
