Governor signs Life Without Parole Bill
"I am thrilled Governor Perry has signed Senate Bill 60, creating a life without parole option for Texas juries in capital cases, and I commend him for his support. In doing so, he has joined the Texas public, the families of victims, and the majority of the Legislature in supporting this important measure that will bring certainty to the families of victims of violent crime."
"I have worked on this issue for sometime, and I would like to thank the Senate Co-Authors, Senator Rodney Ellis, Senator Juan Hinojosa, and Senator Leticia Van de Putte. I must also congratulate Representative Tony Goolsby, the House Sponsor for his tireless efforts on this issue. I also greatly appreciate the support of Senator Whitmire, Chairman of the Senate Criminal Justice Committee and his counterpart, Representative Terry Keel, Chairman of the House Criminal Jurisprudence Committee."
"Most of all, I would like to thank the family members of victims who pushed for this measure and had the courage to come to the Capitol and share their experiences with their legislators. This was difficult for many of them to do, but they chose to testify on an issue that was important to them despite their personal pain. In particular, I would like to express my deepest appreciation to Ms. Paula Kurland, Ms. Bernadette Ruiz and Mr. Josh Houston."
NOTE: Legislative Director Ian Randolph handles this issue for Senator Lucio and can be reached at 512-463-0127.
