TEXAS SENATE COMMITTEE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wednesday, January 27, 2005

Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr., reappointed Chair of International Relations and Trade Committee

"The Border region and distressed communities were well served today by Lt. Governor David Dewhurst's commitment to continue affording them a standing committee in the Texas Senate to address their unique needs," said Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr. (D-Brownsville).

Governor Dewhurst reappointed Sen. Lucio as Chairman of the Texas Senate Committee on International Relations and Trade. This last December, the committee issued their 2004 Interim Report, which documented over 120 recommendations and subrecommendations to address the trade and infrastructure needs of Texas.

"I plan to work with Governor Dewhurst and the leadership in the Border delegation, especially my good friend Senator Judith Zaffirini, to address the workforce, economic development, transportation, health education and housing needs of distressed communities," said Sen. Lucio.

He added, "Already we are working on a series of economic development and colonia legislation aimed at increasing the quality of life of the most needy of Texans.

"I am proud of the confidence that the Lt. Governor has entrusted in me. I will work under his leadership to tackle the critical economic development and infrastructure issues confronting Texas in a bipartisan manner."

The Senator was also appointed to the Business and Commerce Committee, State Affairs, Nominations and the Subcommittee on Emerging Technologies and Economic Development. These appointments will afford Sen. Lucio the ability to directly address emerging technology and economic development initiatives, two of the 79th Legislature's critical priorities.
