Sen. Lucio urges all public and private school students in grades K-6 from District 27 to join "Treasures of the Texas Coast" 2005 Children's Art Contest
AUSTIN, TX--As some of the closest residents to our great Texas shoreline, students in District 27 should be strongly encouraged by their teachers and parents to participate in the Texas Adopt-A-Beach Program "Treasures of the Texas Coast" 2005 Children's Art Contest. Open to students grades K-6, the competition focuses on encouraging young artists to learn about the natural resources found along the Texas coast and help spread the message that "Trashing Texas Beaches Isn't Cool".
"Children in District 27 have the great advantage of living on or near our great Texas beaches," said Senator Lucio. "This proximity offers our kids the opportunity to discover what a public treasure our beaches are. Because of this awareness, and because of this exceptional Adopt-A-Beach program, they can be inspired to produce outstanding works of art."
The Texas General Land Office is sending contest information to public and private schools across Texas to encourage participation. Last year, more than 7,200 students entered the contest. Two winners will be selected from each of the 24 councils of governments in Texas. From the 48 finalists, one grand prize winner will receive two round-trip coach-class tickets from Continental Airlines to any Continental destination in the United States, excluding Alaska and Hawaii, and a class party at Schlitterbahn Watermarks (New Braunfels or South Padre Island). All 48 winners will receive a ticket to the Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi, two all-day passes to Schlitterbahn, a soft-sided insulated lunch bag from Keep Texas Beautiful, a certificate of recognition from the Land Commissioner, and a 2006 calendar featuring the winning artwork. The grand prize winner's teacher will also receive two round-trip coach-class tickets from Continental Airlines. Each entry must be postmarked by Monday, February 7, 2005, and submitted on an 8 _ X 11 sheet of white paper.
