AUSTIN, TX--Chairman Eddie Lucio, Jr. (D-Brownsville) will hold an organizational meeting of the Senate International Relations and Trade Committee tomorrow.
Included on the agenda are two special guests invited by Sen. Lucio to testify on specific issues. Texas Agriculture Commissioner Susan Combs will elaborate on her role in the 1944 U.S.-Mexico Water Treaty. She will also update the committee on the $10 million in federal agricultural assistance fund checks for South Texas farmers who have suffered economically from the lack of irrigation water in 2001 and the status of the request for an additional $10 million for farmers impacted by the same conditions in 2002.
Commissioner Combs will also discuss the $40 million from the Water Conservation Infrastructure Fund created under the North American Development Bank for South Texas farmers.
Mr. Gordon Hill, general manager of the Bayview Irrigation District, will speak on water issues.
Members of the committee include state Senators Eliot Shapleigh, vice-chair, (D-El Paso), Teel Bivins (R-Amarillo), John Carona (R-Dallas), Craig Estes (R-Wichita Falls), Jane Nelson, (R-Flower Mound) and Judith Zaffirini (D-Laredo).
