The University of Texas Pan-American honors Sen. Lucio with Distinguished Alumnus Award
AUSTIN, TX - The Board of Trustees of the University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) Alumni Association yesterday presented state Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr. (D-Brownsville) with the Distinguished Alumnus Award.
"This distinction is such a pleasure, and it gives me an overwhelming feeling of pride--not in myself, but in the institution of higher learning that made me what I am today: a loving grandfather, father and husband, and a public servant who has the great distinction to serve the people of South Texas," said Sen. Lucio.
The recognition is presented to former students and friends for outstanding personal and professional achievements. Sen. Lucio, who currently chairs the Senate Subcommittee on Border Affairs, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in education from UTPA.
The Senator also acknowledged the excellent leadership of Dr. Miguel Nevarez, president of UTPA, and said that his guidance has led this University into the 21st Century. He added that since 1981, Dr. Nevarez has helped UTPA blossom into the world-class institution it is today.
Sen. Lucio, who has been in the Texas Legislature since 1987, presented the following legislative appropriations at the event that have been made to UTPA since 1964, showing an increase from 1990-1991 to 2002-2003 of 53 percent:
Budget Numbers for UTPA:
1988-1989: $42,347,944 (this is the last year that it was Pan American University)
1990-1991: $56,415,227 (first year it was University of Texas-Pan American)
2002-2003: $121,211,277 (this biennium's appropriations)
"Out of the numerous awards I've received during my many years of public service, this one certainly stands out as one of the most meaningful," concluded Sen. Lucio.
