Sen. Lucio announces $88,000 Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund (TIF) grant awarded to Point Isabel Independent School District

AUSTIN, TX--State Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr., (D-Brownsville) announced today that Point Isabel Independent School District received $88,000 in grant funds from the Texas Telecommunications Infrastructure Fund (TIF) Board.

This Non-competitive Special Projects grant was offered to all public school campuses that had never previously received funding from TIF. These campuses will use the funding to purchase basic infrastructure needs such as network connectivity, hardware, training, and software. The funding will aid the improvement of Texas school campuses' infrastructure and increase access to modern technology.

In order to receive funding, the District submitted a Notice of Eligibility and completed a Technology and Professional Development Needs Assessment Survey. The District based campus decisions on the results of the needs assessment and chose between multiple funding options provided by TIF. The application process was simplified and required no matching funds to ensure that every eligible campus would submit an application for funding. Now, every public school campus in Texas has had the opportunity to benefit from TIF funding.

"This state funding source was created in 1995 so that all students who attend public schools and charter schools in Texas can have access to modern technology and gain the expertise and skills they need to succeed in this technological age," said Sen. Lucio. "By giving students and faculty the modern tools they need at the campus level, we are building successful schools, successful students, and a brighter future for Texas as a whole."

Since its creation by the 74th Legislature, TIF has awarded more than $1 billion in grants to its four constituent groups--public schools, libraries, institutions of higher education, and public, not-for-profit healthcare facilities. TIF is set to expire in 2005.
