Sen. Lucio to participate in CONFIA conference in Tamaulipas, Mexico
AUSTIN, TX--State Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr., D-Brownsville, has been invited to speak at the international conference of CONFIA at the Universidad Autonoma de Tamaulipas in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, Mexico on Monday, March 18, 2002.
CONFIA, which stands for Contadores, Finanzas y Banca, Informatica y de Administracion (Accountants, Finance and Banking, Computer Science and Administration) has selected "The Economic Development between our Two Countries" as the theme of the conference.
Sen. Lucio will speak on the theme of "Texas and Tamaulipas: Entering United into the 21st Century."
"It is a pleasure and honor for me to have been invited to participate in this conference of such importance to the future of both our countries," said Sen. Lucio. "Most importantly, I want to congratulate Lic. Jesus Lavin Verastegui, director of the Universidad Autonoma de Tamaulipas, for his leadership and dedication in organizing an event of this magnitude."
The following is an excerpt from Sen. Lucio's speech: We left behind the days in which Mexico was only a source of cheap labor. Today, Mexicans form an indispensable part of our business system throughout the border. As workers and consumers, citizens from both countries contribute to the exchange of over $250 billion per year. Today, the border ceases to be a division of culture and a separation of our lands. Today and forever the border will be the center, the axis of our economic world for the benefit of many, and not just a few.
The Senator also paid homage to the state of Tamaulipas for "organizing a conference that will help with the efforts of promoting the economic progress of our borders and our countries."
