>Sen. Lucio to host Roundtable Discussion on Education for lower Rio Grande Valley
CORRECTION: State Education Commissioner Jim Nelson to attend morning session only due to time constraints
AUSTIN, TX--State Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr., D-Brownsville, is hosting a Roundtable Discussion on Education on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, in both Cameron and Hidalgo counties. Texas Education Commissioner Jim Nelson will be attending the morning session only.
The morning session will be from 9 to 11 a.m. at the University of Texas at Brownsville (UT-B) in the Campus Lecture Hall of the Science, Engineering and Technology Building. The afternoon session will be from 2 to 4 p.m. in the auditorium of South Texas Community College (STCC) in McAllen. UT-B is located at 80 Fort Brown in Brownsville and STCC is at 3201 West Pecan Blvd. in McAllen.
"I am very pleased that Commissioner Nelson will be joining us and getting a first-hand account from our Valley participants of their concerns and ideas for public education," said Sen. Lucio. "As the 77th legislative session approaches, it is of prime importance that we come together as parents, teachers, counselors, administrators and community leaders to share our ideas on how to improve our public education system through the legislative process, and it is particularly helpful to have our Education Commissioner join in this discussion."
The Senator believes that the lower Rio Grande Valley community must continue to work together to ensure that all children have access to a quality public education and that the educators who have undertaken the enormous responsibility of providing that education are fully supported.
