Sen. Lucio to hold press conference announcing pre-filing of his Life Without Parole Bill
AUSTIN, TX--State Sen. Eddie Lucio, Jr., D-Brownsville, will be holding a press conference in the Senate Chamber on Monday, Nov. 27, at 1 p.m. to announce his Life Without Parole Bill.
Sen. Lucio wants Texas to join 33 other states, the federal government and the military in adding another sentencing option in capital cases. Currently, a defendant convicted of a capital crime can only receive a sentence of either life with parole (after serving 40 calendar years) or the death penalty.
"Senate Bill 85 would make life without parole available in those cases where a jury determines that a death sentence should not be imposed," explained Sen. Lucio.
Joining Sen. Lucio at the press conference will be Sen. Rodney Ellis, a co-author of Senate Bill 85 and Rep. Ruth McClendon, who has filed an identical bill in the House. Sen. Ken Armbrister, chairman of the Senate Committee on Criminal Justice and Rep. Juan Hinojosa, chairman of the House Committee on Criminal Justice, may be participating.
In addition to a brief explanation of the bill by Sen. Lucio, there will also be available at the event a detailed press release and fact sheets.
Note: Staff member assigned to issue is Mr. Phillip Golden, general counsel.
