Van de Putte Statement on VA Allegations

(Austin) — State Senator Leticia Van de Putte (District 26, Bexar County and Chair of the Veteran Affairs and Military Installations [VAMI] Committee) today issued a statement on the recent allegations of misreporting of medical appointment wait times at Veteran Administration clinics in Austin and San Antonio:

"Falsifying records and harming our nation's heroes is unacceptable," Senator Van de Putte said. "These allegations, if true, further erode veterans' confidence in a system that should be there to support them.

"The VA needs to be held accountable. As VAMI Chair, I've fought hard to make Texas the number one state in the nation for veterans and their families. If records are indeed being falsified, it undermines our work. The VAMI Committee will be looking into these concerns at VA, but veterans in Texas can be assured that the State of Texas is on their side."

ADDITIONAL INFO: In 2012, the VAMI Committee brought to light the incredible backlog of disability claims at the VA and then worked with state leaders to find support for a Texas solution to a federal problem. Texas' Strike Force and Fully-Developed Claims Teams have reduced the backlog of VA claims in Texas from over 68,000 to less than 27,000.
