Van de Putte Statement on Nidal Hasan Conviction
(Austin) — Today, a military jury convicted Army Major Nidal Hasan of 13 counts of murder and 32 counts of attempted murder in the infamous Fort Hood shootings of November 5, 2009. State Senator Leticia Van de Putte, D-San Antonio and Chair of the Senate Veteran Affairs and Military Installations Committee, issued the following response:
"I am grateful that the jury today took a step toward justice for the heroes and their families that lost their lives or loved ones on that dark day at Fort Hood. I am now hopeful for an appropriate sentence that can close this horrible chapter in U.S. military history. Whatever sentence is handed down won't be enough to relieve the pain felt by these families, but hopefully it will deliver a sense of justice."
