Senate Renames HB 740 the Taryn Kennedy, Nash Sievers, and Rex Van de Putte Act

(Austin) — On Monday, May 13, the Texas Senate passed House Bill 740, a bill that adds Critical Congenital Heart Disease (CCHD) to the list of disorders newborn Texans are screened for under the authority of the Department of State Health Services.

On the Senate floor, Senator Bob Deuell of Greenville amended the bill to be renamed the Taryn Kennedy, Nash Sievers, and Rex Van de Putte Act.

Nash and Taryn both died as infants from undiagnosed CCHD. Rex was the sixth grandchild of Senator Leticia Van de Putte of San Antonio. Rex passed away on May 7 at the age of five months, cause unknown.

"I am so deeply moved by this gesture from my colleague and friend, Dr. Bob Deuell," said Senator Van de Putte. "It was so hard losing Rex so soon, but our family is comforted knowing that his memory, and the memories of Taryn and Nash, will live on in a law that will save babies' lives in the future."

If the House concurs with the amendment, HB 740 will go to Governor Perry for his signature.
