Van de Putte on the passing of Demetrio Rodriguez

(Austin) — On Monday, Demetrio Rodriguez - the San Antonian who served as a plaintiff in two historic class-action suits that changed the face of Texas public school finance funding - passed away at the age of 87. State Senator Leticia Van de Putte of San Antonio issues the following statement:

"A great soldier has fallen in Texas' battle for equality. Much like Rosa Parks, Demetrio Rodriguez one day made the courageous decision that he just wasn't going to take it any more. He refused to stand by while his family - his children - suffered discrimination. The ground broken by San Antonio ISD v. Rodriguez and Edgewood v. Kirby made life better not only for his own children, but millions across Texas. Sadly, his struggle to properly and equitably fund our public schools has not yet been won - we must fight on in his memory, and build upon the foundation he laid."
