Senator Van de Putte on Passage of SJR1
(Austin) — The Texas Senate today passed Senate Joint Resolution 1, which proposes a constitutional amendment that, if approved by voters, would use $5.7 billion from the state's Economic Stabilization Fund (aka the "Rainy Day Fund") to create new accounts outside of general revenue to fund projects for water, transportation, and education needs. Senator Leticia Van de Putte, D-San Antonio, issued the following statement on today's vote.
"SJR 1 is a step in the right direction. This smart use of ESF funds addresses the three issues: diversions, debt, and delay. With today's vote, we have signaled that we are no longer going to kick the can down the road on water, transportation, most importantly, the infrastructure of opportunity: education."
