Gold Star Spouses Receive Support from Senator Leticia Van de Putte

(AUSTIN) — A Gold Star might be the most poignant yet significant recognition the family of a service member can receive. It signals to the world that someone in your family has died in the service of our country.

When Texans approved the property tax exemption for 100% Disabled Veterans and their surviving spouses, we did nothing to help Gold Star Spouses. "It is time to make sure we properly honor the sacrifice of the whole family," said state Senator Leticia Van de Putte, Chair of the Senate Veteran Affairs and Military Installations Committee.

These surviving spouses never had the opportunity for their service members to receive 100% disability - because they died in combat. Senator Leticia Van de Putte supports our Gold Star Spouses saying, "If you are killed in combat you never have the chance to receive a disability rating - and surviving families don't get the property tax exemption afforded to other veteran families. To help correct this omission, I filed SJR 16, with its enabling legislation SB 163. I hope that my colleagues in the Legislature and all Texans will approve this important tax change."
