Veteran Affairs and Military Installations Committee Open House on Wednesday, November 14

(Austin) — Senator Leticia Van de Putte, District 26 (Bexar County) and Chair of the Senate Veteran Affairs and Military Installations Committee (VAMI) today announced that the VAMI office will hold an open house on Wednesday, November 14, 9:30-11:30 a.m.

While VAMI is generally staffed out of Senator Van de Putte's office during the interim between sessions, the actual VAMI office in Room 345 of the Sam Houston Building (on the northeast corner of the Capitol Complex, at 201 East 14th Street) will now be open full-time.

"It is the goal of the VAMI Committee office to be a direct connection between the Capitol and the veteran and military community," said Committee Director Bill Wilson. "Look for more events in the near future. Veterans, active duty service members and their families should always feel welcome to drop in any time they are at the Capitol."

VAMI's special guest at the open house will be Master Sergeant Donald W. Ballowe, who was twice awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross with V for valor for his service in Afghanistan. The first award was in March 2009 with the second award later that same year.

MSgt. Ballowe exemplifies the courage and fighting spirit of the men and women who have served and are now serving in the military.

"Led by Bill Wilson, our very talented and hardworking Committee Director, I think our active military and veteran communities in Texas will find the Veteran Affairs and Military Installations Committee office to be a tremendous resource," said Senator Van de Putte. "Fighting for those who fought for us has always been a top priority for Texas."

Other members of the committee include Vice-Chair Sen. Brian Birdwell of Granbury and Senators Wendy Davis of Fort Worth, José Rodríguez of El Paso, and Craig Estes of Wichita Falls.
