Senator Van de Putte and Representative Diane Patrick File the Internet Dating Safety Act

(AUSTIN) — Today, Senator Leticia Van de Putte (D-26) and Representative Diane Patrick (R-94) filed legislation that will help protect users of online dating services. "Over 20 million Americans use online dating websites to find love," said Van de Putte. "Times have changed since I found my husband over 30 years ago, but one thing remains the same, we need to be safe and protect ourselves from dangerous situations."

In order to help protect online daters, Senator Van de Putte and Representative Patrick filed S.B. 488 and H.B. 1052 respectfully, which will require Internet dating websites to notify their users if criminal background checks have been provided to their members. "This bill provides transparency to Texas consumers so that they can make informed decisions," Patrick stated.

These pieces of legislation also mandate that online dating providers inform their members of safety measures that are designed to increase awareness of safer online dating practices. "Texans should be cautious when beginning any relationship," remarked Van de Putte. "Representative Patrick and I want to make sure our online daters are given the knowledge necessary to make smart choices."
