In response to the appointment of Dr. Francisco Cigarroa as chancellor of the University of Texas System, Senator Leticia Van de Putte released the following statement:

"I applaud the Board of Regent's selection of Dr. Francisco Cigarroa as the new chancellor of the University of Texas System.

"After conducting a coast to coast search, they have made a tremendous decision. "Having successfully led the UT Health Science Center San Antonio for almost a decade, Dr. Cigarroa is poised to address the myriad of fundamental higher education issues that face the state and nation.

"A renaissance man in the truest sense of the term, Dr. Cigarroa is a lover of the arts and sciences. He is an intellectual with a profound understanding of those shunned and left behind by society; he is as comfortable with the country club crowd as he is with those with little means.

"As a renowned transplant surgeon, he has the capacity to inspire greatness. He is known by South Texans as having 'manos de oro' (or hands of gold), for his outstanding success as a pediatric surgeon.

"As we face tough economic times, the success of our universities will affect the future growth and prosperity of our entire state. I am certain Dr. Cigarroa's expertise will ascend the System to new heights; I am positive he will improve upon the national prestige of our higher education institutions.

"I look forward to working with Dr. Cigarroa in this new capacity to address our higher education challenges, particularly tackling the rising costs of tuition and fees. Under Dr. Cigarroa's leadership, I believe we can make higher education accessible to all Texans and allow all students to realize their dreams."
