Senator Leticia Van de Putte Celebrates the Reach Out and Read Program

(SAN ANTONIO, TX) -- On Tuesday, April 29, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., Senator Leticia Van de Putte will participate in the Reach Out and Read Program at the Children's Health Center. The Senator will tour the facility, read to children and speak to them about the importance of literacy. The Center is adjacent to the Christus Santa Rosa Children's Hospital, at 333 North Santa Rosa, located on the third floor.

Reach Out and Read is a national program that makes literacy promotion a standard part of pediatric care, so that children grow up with books and a love of reading. Reach Out and Read encourages doctors and nurses to advise parents about the importance of reading out loud; and to also give books to children at pediatric check-ups, from six months to five years of age. The program has a special focus on children growing up in poverty. By building a unique relationship with parents and medical providers, Reach Out and Read helps families and communities encourage early literacy skills so children enter school prepared for success in reading.

Senator Leticia Van de Putte said, "As a state senator and the mother of six, I consider it a privilege to do my part in motivating children to read. Reading is not only a central aspect of student achievement, but it can also serve as a source of lifelong success and pleasure."
