Senator Van de Putte to Lead National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) Foundation Board

(San Antonio, TX)-- After a successful year as President of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL), Texas State Senator Leticia Van de Putte (D-San Antonio) will preside over the NCSL Foundation Board.

The NCSL Foundation for State Legislatures offers opportunities for businesses, national associations and unions seeking to improve the state legislative process and enhance NCSL's services to all legislatures. It is a nonprofit tax-exempt 501(c)(3) corporation that raises money to support the objectives and special projects of NCSL.

Senator Van de Putte will end her year as President of NCSL at the annual conference in Boston, August 5-10, 2007, and pass the torch to Representative Donna Stone from Delaware. Each NCSL President serves a term of one year, having first served as President-Elect and Vice President.

Among the Senator's successes as President; she is most proud of her work on immigration reform. As president-elect of NCSL, Senator Van de Putte helped create a bipartisan Task Force on Immigration Reform. As a result of NCSL pushing forward states interests, legislation has been filed to authorize increased funding for the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program, establish a funded grant program for states, enhance border security and strengthen employee verification systems. Although immigration is a federal matter, it affects state governments and budgets, especially in Texas. This forum allows state legislators to form consensus policy as debate continues on a federal level.

The National Conference of State Legislatures, The Forum for America's Ideas, is a bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and staffs of the nation's 50 states. NCSL provides a round-table where legislators can impart with one another the most innovative ideas to confront and solve the problems faced by a diverse constituency.
