Senator Van de Putte Attends Bill Signing of Haven for Hope
(SAN ANTONIO, TX) -- On Friday, July 20, at 10:20 a.m., a bill signing ceremony will be held for House Bill 2524. Governor Rick Perry will sign the bill in the Governor's Reception Room, Capitol Building, 2nd Floor.
HB 2524, which was authored by Representative McClendon (D-San Antonio) and sponsored by Senator Van de Putte (D-San Antonio), authorizes the development of a pilot project in Bexar County to provide medical and mental health care. as well as substance abuse treatment. The legislation enables the non-profit Haven for Hope Partnership to establish and operate a public safety triage, detoxification and intervention center.
In Bexar County, an unacceptable number of people with mental illness or substance abuse problems are being "treated" through incarceration rather than through less-expensive options. The facility will serve the homeless, including veterans, suffering from mental health illness or substance abuse issues. It will provide a mechanism for appropriate and cost-effective treatment.
The idea for the Haven for Hope was sparked by former Councilwoman Patti Radle and the leadership of San Antonio business legend, Bill Greehey. It is a partnership of the City of San Antonio, Bexar County, University Health System and the Center for Health Care Services.
Co-authors of the bill, Representative Menendez (D-San Antonio) and Representative Straus (R-San Antonio) will also be in attendance.
