Senator Van de Putte, Senator Shapleigh and Senator West Hold Press Conference on Legislation to Create Veterans' Counseling Program - April 4, 9:45 a.m.

(AUSTIN, TX) -- Senator Leticia Van de Putte (D-San Antonio) will join Senator Eliot Shapleigh (D-El Paso) and Senator Royce West (D-Dallas) for a joint press conference Wednesday, April 4, at 9:45 a.m., in the Lieutenant Governor's Press Room to address legislation which creates a statewide re-integration counseling program for service members returning to Texas from combat duties.

The bill provides a safety-net counseling system for veterans and their immediate family members. Many veterans struggle with re-integration and their return to family and work life as they battle Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Many veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan already discharged from service have been treated through VA counseling centers for readjustment problems and symptoms associated with PTSD.

Senate Bill 1058 authored by West and co-authored by Van de Putte and Shapleigh will be heard in the Senate Veteran Affairs Committee on Wednesday, April 4.

Senator Van de Putte is the Chair of the Senate Veteran Affairs and Military Installations Committee, as well as the Chair of the Senate Democratic Caucus.
