Senator Van de Putte Files Legislation to Encourage the Use of Hydrogen Fuel
(AUSTIN) -- Senator Leticia Van de Putte (D-San Antonio) filed a bill package including SB 1607 through SB 1611, which is intended to promote the use of hydrogen as an alternative fuel. Although, Texas has 13 hydrogen refineries, and is second only to California in production, hydrogen fuel is not typically utilized by consumers.
"I believe these bills will help create the infrastructure needed to use hydrogen commercially, by providing incentive to both the industry and consumers," said Senator Van de Putte. "With increasing air quality issues, we need to begin using hydrogen as a fuel alternative, as it is one of the most clean fuels with nearly 0 emissions."
SB 1607 provides a 25% tax reduction on the appraised value of a property for those who store or produce hydrogen for retail.
SB 1608 provides a sales tax exemption for the consumer on both hydrogen fuel and hydrogen vehicles.
SB 1609 provides to the consumer access to HOV lanes and free toll pass for hydrogen vehicles.
SB 1610 provides a loan program for the hydrogen industry. Approximately 250 million dollars in bonds will be available through the Comptrollers office to be used for carbon-free hydrogen projects.
SB 1611 provides a 25% reduction on the franchise tax for all companies producing hydrogen.
