Five Districts and the Equity Center Honor Senator Van de Putte with Champion for Children Award

SAN ANTONIO - Texas State Senator Leticia Van de Putte was selected by the Equity Center for the "Champion for Children Award" for her diligence and commitment to public education. Five San Antonio-area districts will be presenting this special accolade to her, including Edgewood, San Antonio, Southwest, Northeast, and Northside ISDs, on Friday, February 17, 2006 at 2 p.m. at the SAISD Campus Operations Leadership Training (COLT) Building, 601 N. Flores (next to Fox Tech High School).

"I have always believed that our children are our greatest resource and issues such as school finance, education and children's healthcare remain a top priority to me," said Senator Van de Putte. "I consider it my duty as both a public servant and a mother of six to act in the most responsible and thoughtful way on the behalf of children. I am very grateful to be named a recipient of the Equity Center's 'Champion for Children Award,' for my work in the legislature and I am also thankful for all that the education advocates do for the children of Texas."

Senator Van de Putte was selected by the Equity Center Board of Directors as a recipient of the Champion for Children Award because of her unswerving dedication to achieving equitable education funding for every child regardless of where they live in Texas. This dedication was most dramatically seen last year in her service on the Senate Education Committee and the conference committees developing school finance plans.

"Senator Van de Putte has been has been steadfast in defending our children from school finance plans that would not only hurt them but jeopardize their futures," said Dr. Wayne Pierce, Equity Center director. "She is a leader in the fight to ensure that every Texas child has access to a quality education and that every Texas taxpayer is treated fairly. She is a true Champion for Children."

Past recipients of the Champion for Children award include: Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst; State Senators Todd Staples, Judith Zaffirini, and Eliot Shapleigh; former State Senators David Cain and Teel Bivins; and State Representative Jim Dunnam. This year's recipients are State Senators Leticia Van de Putte, Royce West, and Kip Averitt, and State Representatives Charlie Geren, and Scott Hochberg.

The Equity Center is an association of over 650 school districts. It is the largest research and advocacy organization of its kind in the nation - exclusively representing the interests of over 3.5 million Texas school children who attend school in property-poor and mid-wealth school districts.
