Senator Van de Putte to join Texas Diabetes Council in hosting Diabetes Summit
SAN ANTONIO -- On Monday, November 6, from 8:00 a.m. to noon, State Senator Leticia Van de Putte will join the Texas Diabetes Council and local medical and policy experts to present the Texas Diabetes Summit: Striving for Better Control. The summit takes place at the Texas Diabetes Institute, located at 701 S. Zarzamora Street.
The Summit will feature expert presentations and offer San Antonio health professionals and civic leaders the opportunity to learn more about the impact of diabetes in Texas. It is estimated that more than 100,000 adults (9.6% of adults in the San Antonio area) are affected by diabetes, compared to a state average of 7.9%. According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, approximately 1.2 million Texas adults have diabetes. If current trends in overweight and type 2 diabetes continues, persons born in the year 2000 face a one in three chance of developing diabetes at some time in their life. For Hispanic females, the risk is even higher: one in two.
The Texas Diabetes Council develops a Plan to Prevent and Control Diabetes in Texas every two years which addresses the impact of diabetes in Texas. The Plan can be found on the Council web site at www.texasdiabetescouncil.org.
