Senator Van de Putte to present Jacala Mexican Restaurant with "Texas Treasure Business Award"
SAN ANTONIO -- On Thursday, November 2, Senator Leticia Van de Putte (D-San Antonio) will present Jacala Mexican Restaurant, with the "Texas Treasure Business Award." The Award Ceremony will be held at 5:15 p.m. at Jacala, located at 606 West Avenue.
The "Texas Treasure Business Award" honors businesses that have been in existence in our state for over 50 years and that have remained committed to Texas for generations; those who have helped to create jobs and stimulate economic growth. The award was created as Senate Bill 920 and was passed as authored by Senator Van de Putte, in the 79th Texas Legislative Session. It was then signed into law by Governor Rick Perry. The Texas Historical Commission was selected to administer this tribute.
Jacala Mexican Restaurant opened its doors in 1949, making the original puffy tacos. The first location, on Wilson, only seated 16 people. Over the course of the next several years eight restaurants were opened, but in the end Rudolph and Adel Quinones decided to keep only one restaurant and expand it into three dining rooms. Jacala now stands as the oldest originally owned Mexican restaurant in San Antonio and you will almost always find a member of the family on-site. Jacala Mexican Restaurant remains a wonderful neighbor and a true San Antonio treasure.
