Veteran Affairs and Military Installations Committee and Base Realignment Subcommittee to hold joint-hearing in Webster, Texas

- The Senate Committee on Veteran Affairs and Military Installations, chaired by Senator Leticia Van de Putte of San Antonio, and the Senate Subcommittee on Base Realignment and Closure, chaired by Senator Eliot Shapleigh of El Paso, are meeting jointly on September 12, 2006, in Webster, near Ellington Field in southeast Houston.
The Committee will discuss Ellington Field Joint Reserve Base with respect to homeland security, military operations, and other current and future activities such as NASA and the Veteran Affairs National Disaster Medical System.
The public will have the opportunity to make statements concerning Ellington Field, military voting, state veterans' benefits, including health care facilities, nursing homes, cemeteries, job training programs, educational benefits, and re-employment rights issues, as well as legislation transferring the veteran employment programs under the Texas Workforce Commission to the Texas Veterans Commission and establishing a database in the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board that tracks veterans' usage of the Hazlewood higher education tuition exemption.
The hearing, which is open to the public, will be at 10:00 a.m. at the Webster Civic Center Old City Hall, located at 311 Pennsylvania Avenue, Webster, Texas.
