STATE SENATOR LETICIA VAN DE PUTTE FILES TULIA BILLS

Austin,Tx -- On Monday March 26, a press conference will be held in the Senate Press Room, 2E.9 Capitol Bldg. State Senator Leticia Van de Putte, San Antonio, and State Representative Juan J. Hinojosa-Chair, Criminal Jurisprudence, will present legislation that they have introduced. This package of legislation attempts to make sure that our Texas statutes protect those unjustly accused of crime. The need for this legislation arose due to serious events which occurred in Tulia, Texas in 1999.

"Although these bills may be controversial, Texans deserve to know what can happen to them if they are wrongly accused of a crime", states Sen.Van de Putte

Joining Sen.Van de Putte, and Rep. Juan Hinojosa in support of the legislation are the American Civil Liberties Union, Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund, National Council of La Raza, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and League of United Latin American Council. This legislation is a big step towards justice for all who were falsely accused and to prevent such incidents from happening again.
