SENATOR FRASER STATEMENT ON PASSAGE OF FEDERAL HEALTH CARE LEGISLATION
"On Tuesday, I sent a letter to Governor Rick Perry asking him to call a Special Session of the Texas Legislature so that our state can consider options to decrease the impact of H.R. 3590, the so-called Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, on Texans.
"I have been contacted my many of my constituents who are demanding that Texas do something now and not wait until the Legislature reconvenes in January. I agree that we should not wait to take action.
"I am truly concerned over the cost of this measure to our state budget. The Texas Health and Services Commission estimates the proposal will burden Texas taxpayers by an additional $24.3 billion over the next 10 years. With our current budget already tight, we cannot afford this new federal mandate.
"I am also concerned about the impact of this legislation on Texans. I support the Attorney General's efforts in protecting the constitutional rights of all Texans and defending our state from further infringement by the federal government.
"It is time that Texas told the federal government to stop abusing its power and let Texas run Texas."
