AUSTIN -- State Senator Troy Fraser has been reappointed chairman of the Senate Committee on Business and Commerce by Lieutenant Governor-elect David Dewhurst.
The committee oversees all matters relating to the general business climate of Texas, including economic development.
"Senator Fraser has done an outstanding job as Business and Commerce chair for the past year," Dewhurst said in making the announcement. "As a seasoned legislator and leader with a background in business, he will be a key player as the Texas Senate faces the challenges of this legislative session. I will rely heavily on his expertise and experience, particularly on economic issues."
Fraser, R-Horseshoe Bay, will also serve as a member of the Natural Resources Committee, which handles water, air and oil and gas issues; the State Affairs Committee, a catch-all panel that handles major state policy and state government issues; and the Veterans Affairs & Military Installations Committee and its subcommittee on Base Realignment and Closure.
"I'm pleased with the assignments and I look forward to getting to work," Fraser said. "Given the budget situation and the insurance crisis, this will be one of the toughest sessions in 20 years."
Fraser during the last legislative session was vice chairman of the Business and Commerce Committee. He became the chairman in January 2002, when the previous chairman retired.
Also serving on the Business and Commerce Committee are Senators Kip Averitt, R-Waco; Ken Armbrister, D-Victoria; Kim Brimer, R-Fort Worth; Craig Estes, R-Wichita Falls; Mike Jackson, R- La Porte; Eddie Lucio, D-Brownsville; Letecia Van de Putte, D-San Antonio; and Tommy Williams, R-The Woodlands.
