CASA DE MISERICORDIA RECEIVES TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES FUNDING

Casa de Misericordia (CASA) received more than $43,000 funding for fiscal year 2001 for the operation of its domestic violence center by the Texas Department of Human Services Family Violence Program, Senator Judith Zaffirini, D-Laredo, announced today (January 20).

"Supporting systemic changes toward long-term solutions to domestic violence is a top priority," Sen. Zaffirini said. Since opening its doors in July, 1998, CASA along with the Webb County-Laredo Domestic Violence Coalition has promoted awareness and community action for battered women and their families.

"CASA's executive director, Sister Rosemary Welsh, R.S.M., R.N., is a tireless advocate for comprehensive services and long-term support for victims of domestic violence," Sen. Zaffirini said. "Thanks to Sister Rosemary's hard work and dedication, many women and families are provided with necessary services to help them escape dangerous environments. Her compassion and integrity are an integral part of the success of this center."

The Texas Department of Human Services will fund CASA fully with $70,000 in fiscal year 2002. The center was eligible to apply for full funding by the department since it has been in operation for more than nine months.

Sen. Zaffirini serves as the Vice Chair of the Senate Committee on Education and is a member of the Senate Committees on Finance, Redistricting and Administration
