Statement by Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa
on award for his legislative achievements of the 82nd Session by the South Texans' Property Rights Association
I am truly honored to have received this award by the South Texans' Property Rights Association. During the 82nd Session various pieces of legislation were passed that were very important to protect property rights of landowners.
The STPRA came to me with their concerns regarding landowner liability, reimbursement for property damage, border security, and human smuggling.
We were able to strengthen liability protections for landowners in instances where an accident occurred on their property as a result of a police pursuit. Additionally, we included language that removed the reimbursement "caps" to a landowner if there was property damage as a result of an accident involving an abandoned vehicle. We were also able to pass legislation that makes it easier to prosecute smugglers of undocumented people. With the help of the many landowners directly impacted, we were able to successfully address these issues.
I look forward to continue working with STPRA to protect the rights of property owners.
